Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
First I took a sales job at Nordstrom and found I really enjoyed working with people.
Then I was an intern at Weber Shandwick, a PR agency, where I realized I loved communications.
Then I discovered what area of PR I wanted to focus on during my time at PR agencies.
Then I took an in-house job at Capital One, where I was able to drive PR programs.

Day to Day

A great day can mean a lot of things in the world of public relations. Sometimes it's getting a great story about a Capital One product or executive in the New York Times or another media outlet. Other times, it can be pulling off an awesome event for your company. And it can even be as simple as writing a really great press release.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for high school students

Challenge yourself in your English classes, especially writing. Nail the art of proof reading. Join clubs that hone your social skills and allow you to be comfortable in foreign and possibly uncomfortable situations.
