Skills & Education

Advice for getting started

While working in my first sales job, I felt as if I wasn't making enough of a contribution and I just wasn't the right person for that type of role. However, after sharing my doubts with my boss, he encouraged me to keep at it because he knew the fruits of that kind of labor take time to show. He was right. I eventually started seeing success in the role and felt a lot more confident in my abilities by the time I moved onto my next sales position.

Here's the path I took:

  • High School

  • Bachelor's Degree

    History/Political Science

    Texas Christian University

Life & Career Milestones

  • 1.

I grew up in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

  • 2.

I graduated from Texas Christian University with a degree in history and political science.

  • 3.

After graduating, I moved to San Francisco, California, with aspirations to start a high-end food delivery business.

  • 4.

I was in competition with someone who had better connections in the area, so I decided to find another job to support myself—I ended up taking a sales job for a commercial cleaning company.

  • 5.

I moved on to do sales for companies in the education sector, including a start-up that allowed me to gain experience in a lot of different business areas while working my way up.

  • 6.

That start-up eventually partnered with Follett Corporation and I was asked to take on a new library venture for the company—my success in the role led to more opportunities for the companies.

  • 7.

My responsibility in the company grew, and I’m now leading the whole enterprise as president and chairman!
