Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

  • THE NOISE

    Messages from Peers:

I'm a trained project manager, and I've managed many transportation projects, including both planning and engineering design projects. I've received criticism that, 'You're a planner, you shouldn't be guiding engineering work.'

  • How I responded:

Academic training is just that—training. Every day we see and learn things that prepare us for tomorrow. In my role as a project leader, I have to guide work to solve mobility challenges and navigate the complex process of building infrastructure. It takes a multidisciplinary team to solve complex challenges, and diversity of the team is critical to success. If you face a similar challenge, know that leadership comes in many packages and that who you are today is not who you will always be.
