How I responded to discouragement
THE NOISE
Messages from Society in general:
You shouldn’t be helping people (immigrants) who drain our nation’s resources and take our jobs. I heard that studying Arabic was only for people who wanted to be national security analysts and that non-profit work would only result in burnout and low pay
How I responded:
Immigrants and refugees are the backbone of our country. They don’t drain the country’s resources; they improve the ones we already have and then multiply those tenfold. They make America better through their resilience and collective experience, and helping them is a direct investment not only in their lives, but in the lives of everyone living in this country, immigrant or citizen. Working with them is worth the low pay and has only inspired me to be a more welcoming and hospitable person.
