Assistant Director of Study Abroad

Manhattan College

Bronx, NY USA

Feeling like I'm making a difference in the world is something I value that much more than having a higher salary!

Milestones

My road in life took a while to figure out.
Graduated from college with no idea what to do with my life!
Got accepted to teach English in France for a year, which was an awesome experience.
Came home from France with no idea what to do with my life (again!).
Found a job working at a small local language school, where I handled almost everything - speaking with students, marketing, even some teaching.
Decided to go to grad school and ended up in New York City at Columbia.
Needed a job while in grad school and happened to find one at a local college in Career Services.
A job in study abroad opened up at the same college, I applied and got the position!
After a few years at my old school, I felt like I was ready for a new title and more responsibilities. I found a great new position that I love!

My work combines:
Travel

Problem Solving

Day to Day

I do many different things depending on the day. I advise students on their options and help with any difficulties they run into; I also meet with faculty to talk about potential new programs we could develop. I often also hold information session, develop marketing materials for programs, and spend time working on materials to help prepare students for their experiences overseas. I also liaise with our partners abroad and get to travel to do site visits - one of my favorite parts of the job!

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for college students

I recommend making as many connections as possible within the field of Higher Education as early as possible. It's a very competitive field and doing things like informational interviews can really help you get a better idea of what the job entails, as well as assist you with making connections that might be able to help you get a position down the road.

Recommended Education

My career is related to what I studied. I'd recommend the path I took:

undergrad
Bachelor
French and Spanish
