Milestones

My road in life has been direct.
Being a Resident Assistant at UGA! The skills I gained were so valuable, I couldn't afford to pay for them. Beyond dealing with unruly freshman, I learned how to be a good employee on a big team.
I struggled to find a 'big company' job right out of college. My connections in the industry were lacking. I worked for a small firm first, and got my talents noticed from there.
My underwriting role involved a market right after Hurricane Katrina. And, I had a coastal territory! Not an easy first run, but LOADS of learning in the challenge.
My manager, who I loved, died. It was painful, and uncomfortable to experience that type of life event at work, but it brought out the work-family bond like nothing else could.
I had to move across the country to pursue the role I wanted, and the next step. It was scary, but once again that work-family from Travelers stepped up and made everything work out.

Day to Day

I'm constantly reviewing data, and trying to make sense of it - or make it useful for others. Sometimes, that data is in a large set of reports about thousands of data points, and sometimes that data is deeply connected to just one account, risk, or customer. But, at the end of the day, my ability to understand the origins of the data (and often the decisions that led to an outcome) are what make my day interesting and fun.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

Network, network, network. Find people in the industry and get to know them, but MORE IMPORTANTLY their companies through their eyes. Ask lots of questions about the people that work there, and how they enjoy it or don't. If someone always talks about how busy they are and how they have no life...that's not the company you want to work for. Find a firm with progressive time off, flexible work arrangements, and a PENSION! That's right, some of us still have pensions in addition to a 401k! #TRV
