Life & Career Milestones

My path in life has been direct

  • 1.

Being a Resident Assistant at UGA! The skills I gained were so valuable, I couldn't afford to pay for them. Beyond dealing with unruly freshman, I learned how to be a good employee on a big team.

  • 2.

I struggled to find a 'big company' job right out of college. My connections in the industry were lacking. I worked for a small firm first, and got my talents noticed from there.

  • 3.

My underwriting role involved a market right after Hurricane Katrina. And, I had a coastal territory! Not an easy first run, but LOADS of learning in the challenge.

  • 4.

My manager, who I loved, died. It was painful, and uncomfortable to experience that type of life event at work, but it brought out the work-family bond like nothing else could.

  • 5.

I had to move across the country to pursue the role I wanted, and the next step. It was scary, but once again that work-family from Travelers stepped up and made everything work out.

Defining Moments

How I responded to discouragement

    Messages from Friends:

Are you sure this role is right for you? It could be a dead end, with no career path.

  • How I responded:

Every professional move isn't necessarily tied inextricably to the next role. While every position you take should enhance your skills (or often more importantly your network), it does not have to be the next step up the ladder in terms of rank. I'm performing in a role I love, engaging with people, and helping. At my core, I love helping and learning, and this role offers both in great measure.

Experiences and challenges that shaped me

  • In all sincerity, the key is finding the right firm. Travelers embraced me for who I am from day one, which is more than some people can say about their family. Do your homework on the firm, it's the people there that matter most for this obstacle.
