I hire CTE teachers and create 21st elective classes for schools in my district.
A typical "great day" provides me the opportunity to present the concepts of CTE / STEM & Career Pathways to teachers, students, parents and business partners. When I get to explain how these elective classes benefit a middle school or high school student and I can see their understanding increase, it makes it all worth it.
Here's the first step for middle school students
Start talking with your school counselor and / or looking into all the assessment options related to understanding yourself and your interests. The match of your interests, abilities and aptitudes is where you will find some interesting opportunities. Once you've identified some type of career interest, seek out classes that you can take related to them. Whether those classes are in your school or in a local community college.
