Milestones

My road in life has taken me all over.
I really enjoyed theater when I was younger and initially thought that that might be something I’d pursue as a career, but I ended up studying English literature when I went to college.
After graduating, I started my career working in higher education administration.
I went back to school and earned my MBA in marketing and international business.
I spent a couple of years working as a marketing manager before transitioning into workforce development.
I spent six years working for the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, first as the director of adult education programs and then associate chief operating officer for workforce strategy.
I joined EmployIndy in 2016 as the chief operations officer, then moved up to chief strategy officer, before landing at my current position as president and CEO.

Day to Day

A typical day may involve working with one of our stakeholders, doing a presentation on a panel about the vision for our organization or another topic of interest—economic mobility, apprenticeships, career-connected learning, etc. I'll then move on to team meetings where I'll talk with the team about the different projects and priorities we have going on in the organization. I'll also provide thought leadership on different issues that are important to our community.

Advice for Getting Started

Here's the first step for everyone

I took a very traditional path into my career. You can definitely follow a similar path to end up in a similar role. However, there are many different and nontraditional paths you can take into this field as well. Take your time to explore and figure out what you like. You don't have to have everything figured out from the get-go. And trust your gut. Make sure that whatever you're doing feels right to you.
