I write and produce films.
I start my day checking my social media sites and connecting with new people who might be interested in my film. Then I'll write a blog post or script a segment of my film. A lot of the time I'm online researching my subject matter, currently ADHD for a documentary. Talk to my Videographer about the latest script changes and how we would like the segment to look and how to get it done. Interviewing on camera and creative shots are my favorite part.
I was a artist who mostly learned on my own, got a break a landed a 3D artist job at a game company where I met people who later went into film. Really, with the internet and the desire to learn, you don't have to go to film school. If you can, yes, do that. You will always get something out of school. I actually studied accounting and business at college and still benefit from basic business skils that help me work independently.
Here's the first step for high school students
Grab a camera, any camera and start shooting. Post Youtube videos, enter film competitions like 24 hr Film. Some of these allow even a cell phone camera! That's because it's the STORY that matters. Film takes all the major arts, so find your weaknesses, say audio or writing and partner with someone who has a passion for film as well.
